EVENT DESCRIPTION: The World University Games are held every other year and are organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The World University Games is a multi-sport competition open to men and women who are between the ages of 17 and 24 (born between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 1995), and is or has been within the past year, a student at a college or university.
EVENT HISTORY: USA Basketball women's teams have participated in 16 prior World University Games and collected a record eight golds, six silvers and one bronze medal. Further, since 1973, the first year the USA women competed in the WUGs, the United States has compiled an 95-15 record.
In 2011 the USA, led by 2012 NCAA National Player of the Year nominees Dlena Delle Donne, Skylar Diggins and Nneka Ogwumike, posted a 6-0 slate en route to the gold medal.
USA WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES PLAYERS OF NOTE: Most notable among the list of WUG alumni are 2008 Olympic gold medalists Seimone Augustus, Sylvia Fowles, Lisa Leslie, DeLisha Milton-Jones, Cappie Pondexter, Katie Smith and Tina Thompson; as well as 2008 head coach Anne Donovan and assistant coach Dawn Staley. Additionally, Olympians Carol Blazejowski, Ruthie Bolton, Pat Head (Summitt), Katrina McClain, Suzie McConnell (Serio), Ann Meyers (Drysdale), Ruth Riley, Katy Steding, Kara Wolters and Lynette Woodward played for the USA in the World University Games. 2012 U.S. Olympic Team hopefuls Tina Charles and Maya Moore were members of the 2009 USA World University Games Team that captured gold and helped the U.S. claim its Olympic berth with a gold-medal finish at the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
