After three straight days of games, teams competing in the FIBA U19 World Championship had a day off. Rather than spending their off day sitting around and doing nothing, the USA U19 squad headed out on a tour that included time with some llamas, seeing one of the many volcanos in the Los Logos region of Chile and sledding. After three days of trials in Colorado Springs in May, five days of training with 15 USA U19 World Championship Team finalists in Orlando in June, a week of two-a-days last week in Colorado Springs and four days of practices and scrimmages in Puerto Montt, Chile, the 2011 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Championship Team is ready to take the court on July 21 against Japan. USA U19 Finalists Meet Two Gold Medalists Julie Foudy and Nastia Luikin, soccer and gymnastic Olympic gold medalists, respectively, met with 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team finalists at ESPN Wide World of Sports during the team's training camp. Stefanie Dolson recently completed her freshman season at perennial women’s basketball national contender University of Connecticut and completed a standout freshman season for the 36-2 Big East champions who advanced to the 2011 NCAA Final Four. The 6-5 center started in 36 of her team’s 38 games, and averaged double-digit scoring (10.2 ppg.). Additionally, she pulled down 6.1 rebounds a game for the Huskies, and tied for the team lead in blocked shots, swatting 1.2 a game. More... |
