Facing off against senior national teams from the FIBA Americas zone, USA head coach Ceal Barry and her squad of 11 collegians and one high school player finished the 2011 Pan American Games in seventh place with a 2-2 record. Playing at the CODE Dome in Guadalajara, Mexico, the USA lost two close games by a combined eight points before rebounding with two wins.

Since the tournament took place in October, the collegiate team members essentially were on loan from their respective college or university during their team's preseason training and even a few days of practice.

In a game that featured six lead changes in the fourth quarter alone, the USA fell to Argentina 58-55 in its opening contest on Oct. 21. Despite 18 points, four blocked shots and a U.S. women's Pan American Games record 21 rebounds from Breanna Stewart, who became just the second U.S. women's high school basketball player to represent her country in the Pan American Games, the USA was unable to capitalize on its opportunities in the game's final minute and fell short by just three points. Katelan Redmon added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Valencia McFarland, playing her 20th birthday, collected seven steals for another U.S. women's Pan American Games single-game high.

The next day, in a game that was decided in the final few minutes as well, the USA suffered a 75-70 setback against Puerto Rico. Tied at 61-61 midway through the fourth quarter, the USA was outscored 14-9 over the final five minutes as Puerto Rico sank its final six free throw attempts to seal the USA's fate. Stewart finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Tavelyn James contributed 12 points, Marissa Kastanek added nine and Shante Evans collected 11 rebounds. Despite shooting 37.7 percent to Puerto Rico's 36.8 percent from the field and winning the rebounding battle 44-28, the USA was plagued by 19 turnovers to Puerto Rico's 11.

The USA wrapped up pool play as Group A's No. 4 seed on Oct. 23 as a 35-15 scoring advantage in the third quarter helped the USA pull away from previously unbeaten Mexico on its way to an 87-58 win. For a third straight game, the USA was led by Stewart, who finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists while shooting 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Also tallying double-digit scoring were Christine Flores and April Sykes with 12 points apiece and Emilie Johnson with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Katelan Redmon collected 10 rebounds.

Compiling an 18-2 run midway through the first period, the USA went on to record a convincing 87-41 win over Jamaica to wrap up the tournament. Tavelyn James sank 5-of-6 from 3-point to lead the USA with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Tallying 10 points in the first quarter, Stewart added 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Shante Evans recorded a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double and Kevi Luper finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

The USA's 62 rebounds against outsized and overpowered Jamaica, including 10 boards from Avery Warley, established a new high for the U.S. women in Pan American Games play, and the team also set a U.S. competition record with 49.5 rebounds per game.
