EVENT DESCRIPTION: The 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship features 16 U19 national teams that will compete for the gold medal.

ELIGIBILITY: Athletes 19 years old or younger, born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are eligible for this competition.

2013 QUALIFIED TEAMS (16): Including host Czech Republic, a total of 16 nations will compete in the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship. While the Czech Republic earns an automatic berth to the tournament, the remaining 15 nations were determined by the five FIBA zone qualifiers in 2012. In addition to the USA (gold medalist), advancing out of the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship were Brazil (silver medalist), Canada (bronze medalist) and Argentina (fourth place); FIBA Africa advanced Senegal (gold medalist) and Ivory Coast (silver medalist); China (gold medalist), South Korea (silver medalist) and Iran (bronze medalist) earned berths out of FIBA Asia; Australia took FIBA Oceania’s spot after wining the best-of-three series against New Zealand; while FIBA Europe will be represented by Croatia (gold medalist), Lithuania (silver medalist), Serbia (bronze medalist), Russia (fourth place) and Spain (fifth place).

PRELIMINARY ROUND GROUPS: Group A: Canada, Croatia, South Korea, Spain; Group B: Argentina, Czech Republic, Iran, Lithuania; Group C: Australia, Brazil, Senegal, Serbia; Group D: China, Cote d'Ivoire, Russia, USA.

EVENT HISTORY: Originally known as the FIBA Junior World Championship, the tournament was held every four years between 1979-2007. FIBA now conducts the U19 World Championship every two years. USA men's teams are 69-13 in the U19/Junior World Championships and have won four gold and three silver medals, most recently finishing with a 7-2 record and in fifth place in 2011.
