U.S. Virgin Islands Defeats Mexico 88-78

The U.S. Virgin Islands (1-2) picked up its first win with an 88-78 victory Monday over Mexico (0-3) at the FIBA U18 Championship for Men at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
The Virgin Islands finished third in its group and will face Puerto Rico (0-3) in the consolation semifinals at 3 p.m. Central Time Tuesday. Mexico, fourth in its group, plays Uruguay (1-2) at 1 p.m.
Aaron Brown of the Virgin Islands led the game by pouring in 39 points. Brown shot 15-28 from the field, and recorded 10 rebounds and four steals. Rasheed Swanston contributed 12 points, hitting 5-8. Scoring 10 points each were Salim Ross and Merwin Potter, who also grabbed 10 rebounds. Potter also dished out four assists.
Leading the way for Mexico was Kevin Acosta, with 22 points. Acosta shot 8-13 from the field, and hit 4-7 beyond the arc. Jesus Quintero with 17 points, sank 6-12 from the field and 3-4 in 3-point range. Putting in 15 points for Mexico was Luis Quintero, who also accounted for four assists. Ruben Regalado scored 13 points and shot 5-8. Mexico’s top rebounder was Rafael Buelna with eight. Buelna put five points on the board.
Halftime had the Virgin Islands leading 46-37, but Mexico closed to 60-66 at the end of three periods, outscoring its opponent 23-20 in the quarter. Mexico got to within six points in the final stanza, but the Virgin Islands won the scoring battle 22-18 to close out the game.
The Virgin Islands shot 47 percent (35-75) for the game, and Mexico hit 41 percent (29-71). But the Virgin Islands held a considerable lead in rebounding, with a 43-29 advantage. The offensive boards were indicative of the game, as the Virgin Islands led 16-9.
