Just the Facts: 2012 FIBA 3x3 Events for Men

FIBA in 2012 will conduct two different World Championship competitions, one for players 18 and under and one in an 'open' category (no age restrictions). The available information on both events can be found below.

EVENT DESCRIPTION: The inaugural FIBA 3x3 World Cup will feature national teams competing for gold under FIBA's 3x3 rules.

2012 TEAMS: TBD

EVENT HISTORY: 2012 marks the first time this event will be held. FIBA’s plans call on the 3x3 World Cup to initially be held every two years, with the hopes of moving it to an annual event in the future.

EVENT DATES: Sept. 27-30, 2012

EVENT DESCRIPTION: The second annual FIBA 3x3 Youth World Cup, which was billed as the 2011 FIBA 3x3 Youth World Championship in its inaugural year, will feature a total of 56 number of teams (24 girls and 32 boys) and is by invitation. In the future, teams will qualify through various qualification tournaments and also by their FIBA 3x3 individual ranking. Athletes must be 18-years-old or younger (born on or before Jan. 1, 1994) in order to compete.

EVENT HISTORY: 2012 marks the second time this event will be held. In 2011 New Zealand captured the gold medal, Bulgaria finished with silver and Italy took the bronze medal. The USA boys team, featuring Shaqquan Aaron, Rondaé Jefferson, Malik Price-Martin and Jordan Swopshire, finished with a 7-5 slate and in eighth place. FIBA’s plans call on the 3x3 Youth World Championship to be held annually.
