2008 USA Basketball Men's Eligibility Requirements

Men and women representing USA Basketball will again be busy in 2008 Players with differing levels of expertise, from athletes in professional leagues to promising young rising stars will wear USA Basketball uniforms in �08.

Players for USA Basketball teams will be selected to teams or to attend trials, based on playing ability, coachability, attitude, position, size, versatility, previous USA Basketball experience and success, current playing status, availability and future potential.

Below are the scheduled 2008 men's events with information on eligibility and the selection process for each team.

2008 Men's Competitions

2008 OLYMPIC GAMES
August 8-24, 2008 � Beijing, China

Selection Process: The 12-member USA team will be chosen by the Managing Director of the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team program and approved by the USA Basketball Executive Committee.
Eligibility: Any U.S. male citizen.

Background: Held every four years, the Olympic men's basketball competition was first contested in 1936. Since that time the U.S. has rolled up an impressive 114-5 record and captured 12 gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals. In addition to the United States, the 12-team field for the Beijing Games includes Angola, Argentina, Australia, China, Iran, Lithuania, Russia and Spain.

Next summer's men's Olympic field will be filled out during the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men, held July 14-20 in Athens, Greece. Brazil, Cape Verde, Canada, Cameroon, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Korea, Lebanon, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Slovenia will vie for the remaining three men's berths for 2008 Olympics

2008 FIBA AMERICAS U18 CHAMPIONSHIP

Selection Process: The USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee will invite approximately 35 athletes, 18-years-old or younger (born on or after 1/1/90), to the USA U18 National Team Trials (dates and location TBD).

Athletes will receive invitations to attend the trials following the Men's Collegiate Committee meeting at the 2008 NCAA Final Four, and the Committee will select the 12-member team during the trials and/or training camp. If you would like to make sure your name is among those considered by the Committee, please complete and return the 2008 Athlete Availability Form (PDF file) by March 1.

Eligibility: Any U.S. male citizen born on or after January 1, 1990.

Background: Originally known as the FIBA Americas Junior World Championship Qualifier, the tournament has been held every four years since 1990 and will now be held every other year. USA men's teams are 29-1 in the U18/ Junior World Championship Qualifiers and won gold in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2006, while capturing bronze in 2002.

Some of the top players who have represented the United States in the past U18 tournaments include: Shareef Abdur-Rahim (1994), Carmelo Anthony (2002), Chris Bosh (2002), Dee Brown (2002), Nick Collison (1998), Grant Hill (1990), Allan Houston (1990), Andre Iguodala (2002), Stephon Marbury (1994), Mike Miller (1998), Quentin Richardson (1998), and Deron Williams (2002).

2007 NIKE HOOP SUMMIT

Selection Process: The USA Basketball Men's Junior Development Committee will invite 10 elite high school seniors to compete in the 11th annual Nike Hoop Summit.

Eligibility: Any U.S. male citizen who is currently a high school senior.

Background: The 2008 USA Junior National Select Team will compete against an international select squad comprised of athletes who are 19-years-old or younger in a game played using international rules. The first Hoop Summit was contested in 1995 and the event was held annually through 2000, picking back up again in 2004. The U.S. owns an 8-2 advantage in the series.
