The Petrovaradin Citadel was built by slaves, murderers and thieves. It took 88 years to build and an average of 70-80 men died per day erecting it from 1692 through 1780. It was built to protect the town from Turkish invasions and mainly populated by the Austro-Hungarian army soldiers. A museum and planetarium now lie within the citadel walls.
