Don Showalter

2013-14 USA Developmental National Team Head Coach

After winning four gold medals in as many summers at the helm of the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team, Iowa City High School head coach Don Showalter returns to USA Basketball to head up the USA juniors through 2014.

Most recently, Showalter led the USA to an 8-0 record and the gold medal at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship, bringing his overall record with USA U16 and U17 teams over the last four summers to a perfect 26-0. For his efforts, Showalter earned in 2012 his fourth-straight USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the Year honor. 

Showalter built a dominate team in 2012 and captured gold at the FIBA U17 World Championship despite losing Jabari Parker for three games and the inside force of Dakari Johnson in the fourth game due to injuries.

In all, Showalter has led the USA men to gold medals with undefeated records in the 2010 and 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships, and the 2009 and 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championships.

Prior to the 2010 Worlds, Showalter and the USA wrapped up a 1-1 mark in exhibition play in Kaunus, Lithuania, including a 95-82 loss to the Russian U18 National Team and a 92-79 win over the Lithuanian U17 National Team. In 2012 he took the USA U17 team to Las Palmas, Canary Islands, where he coached the squad to a pair of exhibition victories, including 108-72 over Latvia’s U17 squad and 89-74 over Australia’s U17 team. 

In addition to winning gold medals for the USA, Showalter has returned to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., for four fall training camps to continue to develop the 2009-10, 2011-12 and 2013-14 USA Basketball Men’s Development National Teams.

Showalter was the USA head coach in the 1998 Nike Hoop Summit and for the North Team in the 1998 USA Basketball Men’s Youth Development Festival. He was the coordinator for a youth clinic hosted by USA Basketball in New York in 2004 and he served as chair of the USA Basketball Cadet and Youth Committee (now the Developmental National Team Committee) from 2001-08.

One of the nation’s most accomplished high school coaches, Showalter completed his 38th year (1974 - present) as a high school head coach in 2011-12. Through the 2011-12 season, he had compiled a 562-294 record (.657 winning percentage) overall and won 16 district titles.

In 2012-13, Showalter took the reigns as head coach at Iowa City High School, where he is currently 7-10, including 3-1 over the last four games in his inaugural season (as of 2/2/13).

The head coach at Mid-Prairie from 1984-85 through 2011-12, Showalter boasted of a 446-202 (.688) mark there, including six trips to the Iowa state tournament. Before assuming head coaching duties at Mid-Prairie, Showalter served eight seasons (1976-84) as head coach at Central Elkader High School (Iowa), where he totaled a 108-63 (.632) record, including an Iowa State Tournament appearance in 1982.

Nominated to the U.S. Olympic Committee as USA Basketball’s 2012 and 2003 Volunteer Coach of the Year, Showalter has been recognized by numerous organizations for his dedication to the game. In 2004 he earned the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Advocacy Award, which also went to Eddie Sutton and Bo Ryan that year. In 2009 Showalter was honored by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association as the Regional Coach of the Year after having been named the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year nine times (1981, 1982, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010).

In addition to his high school coaching duties, Showalter was selected to coach in the 1999 McDonald’s High School All-America Game and the 2005 and 2012 Jordan Brand All-Star Games. He has also spoken at basketball clinics around the world, including in Australia, Belgium, England, Italy, Russia, Scotland, Spain (Canary Islands) and Switzerland.
